v1.0.1 · 29 things you can do 1 change to know before upgrading
Follow GitHub

Change themes, wallpapers, fonts, window shape, animations, the bar and per-app rules of an Omarchy desktop from one app, applied live with undo.

What you can do with Omarchy Lacquer

Name the whole current look (theme, windows, bar, fonts, pointer, GTK pins, text drawing) and restore it later or on another machine.

Since v1.0.1
Good to know

Window rules, monitor arrangement and launcher entries are deliberately not part of a look. Applying keeps a Just before look first.

Follow a seven-note tour on first run, reopenable from the lamp in the header.

Since v1.0.1

Set font smoothing, hinting and subpixel order.

Since v1.0.1
Good to know

Written to a Lacquer-owned fontconfig file, not previewed; apps read it when they start.

Paint the empty desktop in your theme's colour so it follows theme changes even when Lacquer is closed.

Since v1.0.1

Pick a Calm, Standard, Expressive or Snappy feel for how the whole desktop moves, with a speed multiplier.

Since v1.0.1
Good to know

A starting point only: Animations and Curves still edit every value, and the section says when they no longer match.

Set resolution, refresh rate, scale and rotation, reverting on its own unless confirmed within ten seconds.

Since v1.0.1
Good to know

README states testing on one screen only; only a confirmed change is written, to hypr/monitors.lua.

Set how one app opens: float or tile, size, centring, workspace, opacity, and which screen it is pinned to.

Rename an app in the launcher, change its icon or hide it.

Since v1.0.1
Good to know

Works on a copy of the .desktop file in ~/.local/share/applications; undo deletes the copy.

Add rounded display corners or brackets, an accent frame, vignette, scanlines or grain over the screen.

Since v1.0.1
Good to know

Needs the optional Lacquer Shell companion plugin, which Lacquer offers to install.

Open, close or toggle Lacquer, jump to a section, apply a theme or set a wallpaper with `omarchy-shell lacquer` commands.

Since v1.0.1
Good to know

Unknown theme or section names are refused; `setWallpaper` checks only the file's location.

Change settings live with no Apply button, undo with Ctrl+Z, and reset any row or section to Omarchy's default.

ExperimentalSince v0.3.0
Good to know

Ctrl+Z covers looknfeel.lua and shell.toml but not shell.json (bar layout and plugin settings).

Browse installed themes with previews and palette strips and apply a theme or one of its wallpapers.

1 other tool for switch theme
ExperimentalSince v0.3.0

Switch to a new theme on every boot, or follow sunrise and sunset with Day and Night themes.

ExperimentalSince v0.3.0
Good to know

Off until you turn it on; stays dormant while OmaShuffle is installed.

Make a theme from any wallpaper using aether, with a palette preview before applying.

ExperimentalSince v0.3.0
Good to know

Needs aether; Generate & apply switches the desktop to a theme called aether and may write theme files into Zed, VS Code and Neovim.

Set the terminal font, interface font and text size.

ExperimentalSince v0.3.0
Good to know

Changing the terminal font restarts the shell; Lacquer reopens where it was.

Pin the light/dark mode, GTK theme and icon theme so they survive theme switches.

ExperimentalSince v0.3.0
Good to know

Only pinned choices are re-applied; unpinned ones keep following the theme.

Choose the cursor theme and size.

ExperimentalSince v0.3.0

Set the nightlight schedule and temperature via hyprsunset.

2 other tools for night light
ExperimentalSince v0.3.0
Good to know

Turning the schedule off restores Omarchy's shipped hyprsunset.conf; a hand-written schedule is kept unless you choose to replace it.

Adjust gaps, borders, rounding, opacity, blur, shadow and window groups.

1 other tool for rounded corners
ExperimentalSince v0.3.0
Good to know

Needs Omarchy's Lua Hyprland config; values are written to a fenced block in looknfeel.lua.

Edit every Hyprland animation leaf's speed, curve and style, and drag bezier handles with a play preview.

ExperimentalSince v0.3.0
Good to know

Only edits curves that already exist; a curve added at runtime lingers until Hyprland restarts.

Restyle the bar, menus, popups, notifications, launcher and lock screen through shell.toml with no restart.

ExperimentalSince v0.3.0
Good to know

Pinning a colour stops theme changes moving it; the row is marked.

Set the bar's position and transparency and move, reorder or remove widgets across its three sections.

1 other tool for bar widgets
ExperimentalSince v0.3.0

Pick lock-screen designs and boot screens, set idle lock and screensaver timings and screensaver art.

2 other tools for lock screen
ExperimentalSince v0.3.0
Good to know

Lock designs and lock-explorer boot screens still need lock-explorer; the boot logo needs imagemagick and asks for your password in a floating terminal.

Set the menu's size, corners, border and transparency.

ExperimentalSince v0.3.0
Good to know

Needs OmaMenu with Menu Look IPC; the section is hidden otherwise.

Set padding, cursor and opacity for foot, alacritty, kitty and ghostty, plus btop and starship options.

ExperimentalSince v0.3.0

Edit the settings of any installed plugin, as controls built from the schema in its manifest.

ExperimentalSince v0.3.0

Import Omaland's look-and-feel values into Lacquer and remove Omaland's block.

ExperimentalSince v0.3.0

Undo every change Lacquer wrote with lacquer-cleanup before removing the plugin, with first-run backups of three config files.

ExperimentalSince v0.3.0
Good to know

Fonts, shell.toml/shell.json values and terminal lines are listed but left in place.

Newest first
v1.0.1

1.0.1: setting descriptions are always visible again instead of opening on hover; the mouse wheel no longer changes values (Ctrl+wheel still steps); the window can be resized by its bottom-right grip and the size is remembered.

Behavior changedAffects: Everyone using 1.0.0.

v1.0.1
with v1.0.0

Save a whole set of settings under one name and put it back later, or carry it to another machine as one file.

Details

1.0.0 adds Saved looks (written to ~/lacquer-looks.json), a first-run tour, a text-drawing page, a pointer page, motion feels, border and shape presets, display settings, per-app rules, app launcher editing and a screen frame. 1.0.1 shows setting descriptions permanently, stops the wheel changing values and makes the window resizable.

Also: Guided tour, pointer page, readability check, descriptions always visible, resizable window.

Update with `omarchy plugin update io.github.deunnis.lacquer`; needs Omarchy 4. Screen frame needs the Lacquer Shell companion plugin.
