Tile, float and group your windows on Wayland with animations, blur and per-window rules, all set from one config file that reloads as you save.
What you can do with Hyprland
Animate windows and workspaces with custom bezier curves, and add blur, gradient borders, shadows and rounded corners.
Use workspaces that are created and removed on the fly, per monitor.
1 other tool for multi monitor workspacesKeep apps on a special workspace that you show and hide with a key, like a scratchpad.
2 other tools for dropdown terminalGroup windows into tabs that share one tile, with a bar to switch between them.
1 other tool for tabbed windowsSet rules per window, monitor or layer, such as where an app opens, its size, opacity or whether it floats.
1 other tool for window rulesBind keys to any action, group binds into submaps, and pass global keybinds to the apps you choose.
1 other tool for keybindingsControl the compositor and react to its events from scripts through hyprctl and a socket.

Add features through plugins installed with the built-in plugin manager, hyprpm.
1 other tool for Hyprland pluginsAllow screen tearing for chosen windows to cut input latency in games.
See config changes applied as soon as you save the file, without restarting.
1 other tool for live reload configType with an input method or on-screen input panel through native Wayland support.
Hide chosen layers, such as notifications or a bar, from screen sharing and screenshots taken by other apps.
Reset all idle timers on demand, so idle actions such as locking start counting from zero.
1 other tool for idle inhibitRotate the input of a touchscreen, tablet or other device to match a rotated display.
Good to know
Only for devices whose driver supports rotation through libinput.
Zoom into the screen to see details, with a camera that follows the cursor or stays in place.
Arrange windows in a scrolling layout: columns side by side on a strip that scrolls left, right, up or down.
Show one window at a time across the workspace with the monocle layout.
Use a different layout on each workspace.
Write the configuration in Lua (hyprland.lua), with variables, functions and an API for binds, rules and layouts.
1 other tool for Lua configGood to know
Introduced as work in progress; the example config is not exhaustive.
Load an ICC color profile for a monitor.
Before you upgrade Hyprland
Newest first`hyprctl monitors` and `hyprctl monitors -j` print `scale`, `sdrBrightness`, `sdrSaturation` and `sdrMinLuminance` at full precision instead of rounded to two decimals.

Move your configuration from hyprland.conf to hyprland.lua before upgrading to 0.57; from 0.56.1 a .conf config shows a warning on startup.
Read the evidence
The example config shipped with Hyprland is now example/hyprland.lua; example/hyprland.conf was removed.

Delete dwindle:pseudotile, decoration:shadow:ignore_window (now always on) and render:cm_fs_passthrough (handled by render:cm_auto_hdr); rename misc:vfr to debug:vfr.

Move plugin:hyprscrolling: options to scrolling: and set the scrolling layout instead of loading the hyprscrolling plugin.

Replace the togglesplit and swapsplit dispatchers with layoutmsg togglesplit and layoutmsg swapsplit.

Rename dwindle:single_window_aspect_ratio and dwindle:single_window_aspect_ratio_tolerance to layout:single_window_aspect_ratio and layout:single_window_aspect_ratio_tolerance; they now apply to every layout.

Rewrite every windowrule and layerrule line in the new syntax described in the Window Rules wiki page; old lines no longer apply.
Replace misc:new_window_takes_over_fullscreen and master:inherit_fullscreen with misc:on_focus_under_fullscreen.

Rename misc:disable_hyprland_qtutils_check to misc:disable_hyprland_guiutils_check; hyprland-qtutils is archived in favor of hyprland-guiutils.

Hyprland release history 8
Reload your configuration from the ground up with hyprctl reload full-reset without crashing the compositor.
Details
`hyprctl reload full-reset` no longer registers every config value twice and crashes; `hyprctl monitors` prints `scale`, `sdrBrightness`, `sdrSaturation` and `sdrMinLuminance` unrounded. IME popups draw above every layer and the lock screen, and on the scrolling layout `focus` in a direction leaves a fullscreen window.
Also: Screen-share window capture shows the software cursor again; popups on keyboard-exclusive layers get mouse events; sendshortcut works from binds with a modifier; gaps_out no longer overrides float_gaps; mirror rules apply when the target connects later; LuaLS stub covers more hl functions.
Hyprland v0.56.2, a patch release of fixes backported from main; no new dependencies.

Get a warning on startup while your config still uses the .conf format, before 0.57 drops it.
Details
A .conf config now shows a notification: support for the .conf format will be removed in Hyprland 0.57. New changeworkspaceid socket2 event.
Hyprland v0.56.1.

Add motion blur to moving windows.
Correction: The ground-up reload command is `hyprctl reload full-reset`, not `hyprctl config full-reload`, and it crashed the compositor until v0.56.2.
Details
New motion blur and tonemap settings, Lua-driven live gestures, hyprctl repl and hyprctl config full-reload, no_auto_hdr window rule, stableid: window selector and groupbar disable_when_only. No breaking changes.
Also: gradient and angle animation for glow and shadow; tablet eraser and pressure options; xdg interactive drags.
Hyprland v0.56.0.

Write your Hyprland configuration in Lua instead of hyprland.conf.
Details
A Lua config manager is used when hyprland.lua exists; the example config is now example/hyprland.lua. New spring animations, glow decoration, ICC profiles, device-specific binds and device tags, and a confine_pointer window rule. Four options were removed or moved. Groups v0.55.0 to v0.55.2.
Also: scrolling layout: center, expel and consume, wrapping options; groupbar middle_click_close.
Hyprland v0.55.0 and later; the Lua config is new and its options are still being filled in.

Arrange windows in a built-in scrolling layout, as a strip of columns you scroll through.
Details
Layouts were rewritten: new built-in scrolling and monocle layouts, a layout: workspace rule for per-workspace layouts, and togglesplit/swapsplit removed in favor of layoutmsg. Groups v0.54.0 and v0.54.1.
Also: cursor zoom gesture; groupbar text padding.
Hyprland v0.54.0 and later.

Zoom into the screen with a camera that stays put instead of following the cursor.
Details
Window rule syntax was rewritten (see the wiki); misc:on_focus_under_fullscreen replaces two fullscreen options. New groupbar blur, detached-camera zoom, tablet cursor hiding and quirks:prefer_hdr. Groups v0.53.0 and v0.53.1.
Also: locale option; hyprpm shows plugin authors.
Hyprland v0.53.0 and later; window rules must be rewritten when upgrading.

Hide chosen layers, such as notifications, from screen sharing.
Details
New noscreenshare layer rule, forceidle dispatcher, set/unset/toggle for the fullscreen dispatcher, an option to rotate an input device, and submaps that close by themselves. Groups v0.52.0 and v0.52.1.
Also: modal window rule property; cursor:zoom_disable_aa; render:non_shader_cm.
Hyprland v0.52.0 and later.
