What you can do with codebase-memory-mcp

Index a local repository and reuse its code structure across sessions.

Present at v0.0.1
Good to know

Static extraction can miss dynamic or unsupported constructs. Coverage tools report gaps; graphs larger than the memory budget fail without replacing the previous index.

Trace callers, callees and cross-file dependencies of a function.

Present at v0.0.1
Good to know

Resolution depends on the language and source patterns the analyzer recognizes.

Find functions and classes by name, file, relationship or caller count.

Present at v0.0.1
Good to know

Zero callers is a static-analysis signal; it does not establish that code is unused at runtime.

Query code relationships with read-only Cypher-style expressions.

Present at v0.0.1
Good to know

Supports a subset of Cypher; it is not a general Neo4j server.

Search text in indexed source files and retrieve source for a named function.

1 other tool for: Search code
Present at v0.0.1
Good to know

Requires an indexed project; source snippets read the files on disk.

Map staged, unstaged or branch changes to affected symbols and callers.

Since v0.4.10
Good to know

Requires Git on PATH and an indexed graph; risk labels are based on graph distance.

Inspect languages, packages, routes, entry points and clusters in a codebase overview.

Since v0.4.10
Good to know

Layer classification is heuristic; the graph reflects static extraction.

Show all 32

Save and retrieve architecture decisions across coding sessions.

Since v0.4.10
Good to know

Section names match exactly, including case. Cached reads during another process's reindex may briefly return the older ADR.

Run code exploration tools directly from the command line.

Since v0.4.10
Good to know

CLI calls are single operations and do not start a watcher in this version.

Refresh the code graph automatically as indexed files change.

Since v0.4.10
Good to know

Watching depends on session registration; disable automatic registration with `auto_watch=false`.

Register the code exploration tools with supported coding clients.

Since v0.4.10
Good to know

Automatic setup depends on the detected client and its supported configuration.

Index and explore code on Windows.

Since v0.4.10
Good to know

Requires a supported Windows binary and writable installation/configuration paths that pass ownership checks.

Explore a repository's code relationships in an interactive 3D graph.

Since v0.5.7
Good to know

The UI listens locally and can be configured with `ui_enabled` and `ui_port`.

Index a newly opened project automatically when an MCP session starts.

Since v0.5.7
Good to know

Opt in with `config set auto_index true`; the project root comes from the session working directory.

Explore Kubernetes resources and Kustomize overlay relationships alongside code.

Since v0.5.7
Good to know

Extracts supported resource types and overlay references from local manifests.

Choose which language parser handles a custom file extension.

Since v0.5.7
Good to know

Set `extra_extensions` in project or global configuration; project mappings take priority.

Find code using semantic keywords or full-text ranking.

Since v0.8.1
Good to know

`semantic_query` is an array parameter of `search_graph`, not a separate tool; embeddings run locally.

Find structurally similar functions and semantic relationships in the graph.

Since v0.8.1
Good to know

Similarity edges are heuristic; semantic relationships are restricted to the same language.

Bootstrap a teammate's local graph from a compressed snapshot stored with the repository.

Since v0.8.1
Good to know

Uses `.codebase-memory/graph.db.zst`; importing verifies integrity and then indexes local changes.

Inspect argument-to-parameter data flow and publish-subscribe channel relationships.

Since v0.8.1
Good to know

Covers recognized static patterns; dynamic channel names may remain unresolved.

Find functions with high complexity, deep loops or scan patterns through graph queries.

Since v0.8.1
Good to know

Metrics describe extracted source structure rather than measured runtime performance.

Build and run local code exploration on BSD systems.

Since v0.8.1
Good to know

BSD support is documented in 0.7.0; later releases repair additional runtime and platform integration paths.

Run code indexing and exploration natively on Windows ARM64.

Since v0.9.0
Good to know

Requires the Windows ARM64 release binary.

Inspect which files and source ranges were skipped or only partially indexed.

Since v0.10.8
Good to know

Coverage describes extraction gaps, not a guarantee that all relationships are resolved correctly.

Share background indexing, watchers and the graph UI across coding-client sessions.

Since v0.10.8
Good to know

Active processes must agree on version, build, coordination ABI and canonical cache root.

Distinguish callable references from actual calls and inspect resolution evidence.

Since v0.10.8
Good to know

`CALL_REFERENCE` requires a uniquely proven callable target; ambiguous uses remain `USAGE`.

Choose which detected coding clients receive tool configuration.

Since v0.10.8
Good to know

Use `install --clients=claude,codex`; setup still requires a supported detected or explicitly configured client.

List declarations in source order for one exact repository-relative file.

Since v0.11.0
Good to know

`get_file_outline` requires project and file path; supports label filtering and pages of at most 200 rows.

Compare added and removed node and edge identities between two indexed snapshots.

Since v0.11.0
Good to know

`compare_graphs` reports identity additions/removals, with per-set limits and a 512 KiB output budget; both projects must already be indexed.

Trace table, view and dbt model dependencies through SQL queries.

Since v0.11.0
Good to know

Lineage comes from recognized FROM/JOIN and Jinja-templated SQL patterns.

v0.11.0

Indexing spills temporary work under the cache and fails whole with `over_memory_budget` if necessary, preserving the previous index; increase `CBM_MEM_BUDGET_MB` when the graph cannot fit.

Behavior changedAffects: Users indexing large repositories or setting memory budgets.

v0.11.0

Index large repositories within a memory budget while preserving the previous index if the new run cannot finish.

Details

Indexing spills finished work to disk and reports over-budget failure without replacing the serving index. The first run rebuilds old indexes once; compact output gains bounded semantic pagination, and new tools expose file outlines and snapshot comparisons.

Also: File outlines, graph comparisons, SQL/dbt lineage, broader client support and explicit output-contract changes.

v0.11.0. Allow time for one full reindex per old index; ADRs and metadata are preserved. Native binaries are available for Linux, macOS and Windows.

Details

`check_index_coverage` and the UI expose missed code; clients share a coordination daemon. The grouped fixes restore MCP output, concurrent indexing, legacy upgrades and configuration repair after the initial 0.10.0 release.

Also: Coordinated sessions, repaired MCP replies and installers, and explicit upgrade and query-output changes.

Use v0.10.8 for this series. v0.10.0 MCP replies were broken; 0.10.7 npm/PyPI packages were deprecated or yanked because their binary URLs were wrong.
